25 jaar AFAS Live

In 2001, we opened our doors. We look back on countless shows and events. Will you join us on a tour through our history?

First pile & construction

On April 9, 1998, the first pile for the Heineken Music hall was driven! Construction on Johan Cruiff Boulevard took a total of three years.

Opening Heineken Music Hall

On March 15, 2001, the Heineken Music Hall officially opened. Heineken Music Hall (now AFAS Live) more than lives up to its motto 'Live will never be the same!'. The venue's Black Box is specially designed for amplified (pop) music and, according to experts, sounds better than any other hall. It is also the only venue in the Netherlands to have been nominated multiple times for the prestigious Pollstar Award for Best International Concert Venue.

Deftones, the first concert

Deftones performed the very first concert at the Heineken Music Hall on March 19, 2001, with Linkin Park as the opening act (who themselves played their own show at the HMH on September 24, 2001).

Notably, the band played a lot of older material from their first two fan-favorite albums, 'Adrenaline' and 'Around The Fur'. Deftones showed why they are considered one of the best live bands of the moment. It's no wonder the crowd-surfing ban was widely ignored.’ Review by Trouw

Concert André Hazes

On December 10 and 12, 2001, legend André Hazes (†2004) performed in our sold-out hall.

Commercial Heineken

BEER? Who remembers him? The commercial at the Heineken Music Hall with 'the best acoustics in Europe'.

Pepsi Stage

Remember this? Between 2002 and 2007, the Heineken Music Hall operated the neighboring event complex. The building had opened in 2001 as the Grace Theather, specially constructed for the musical Grace commissioned by Bert Maas. Its distinctive 1950s-style interior was inspired by the Palace of Monaco. In the summer of 2002, the production went bankrupt, and HMH took over. Between then and 2007, the venue hosted around 150 events, ranging from Bon Jovi to Kane and from DI-RECT to Freek de Jonge.

Hessel

On March 28 and 29, 2003, Hessel, known as the Bruce Springsteen of Terschelling, performed in a sold-out Heineken Music Hall with his show Hessel Does It Again.” It was a special moment for Hessel, as his daughter Tess sang solo here for the first time.

Two 7's Splash

The large-scale Reggae Festival, held annually since 1996, came to the Heineken Music Hall for the first time in 2003. The festival is named after Culture’s album 'Two Sevens Clash', and because the first edition took place on the seventh of July, it was styled as Two 7’s Splash.

Beyoncé

'In a still fairly packed Heineken Music Hall, she showed that she can hold her own on stage even without her groupmates Michelle Williams and Kelly Rowland.' Review by NRC

Beastie Boys

In 2004, New York hip-hop group Beastie Boys played their final concert in the Netherlands at the HMH.

"Over the years, they’ve become musically wiser and more subtle, but their recent tribute to old-school hip-hop isn’t far removed from past tracks. This made it easy to jump through time, allowing older fans to enjoy the classics they wanted, like ‘No Sleep Till Brooklyn.’' Review by Trouw.

Concert Bon Jovi

Bon Jovi performed at the Heineken Music Hall on September 16, 2005. 'Europe’s Largest Listening Party' was held to celebrate the release of his then-new album 'Have A Nice Day'.

HMH 5-live

On March 15, 2006, we celebrated our 5th anniversary with HMH 5-Live. Five events marked five years of live music! 5LIVE quickly made its motto clear: Live has never been the same.” On the first night, May 21, 2006, HMH opened its doors at 4 PM, with Racoon, Krezip, Beef, The Sheer, and Kraak & Smaak performing on our stage.

Bruce Springsteen

'Bruce Springsteen’s concert sold out in a record four minutes. Accompanied by about sixteen musicians, including horns, violins, banjo, a pedal steel guitar, and even a choir, Springsteen kicked off with ‘O Mary Don’t You Weep,’ and it only took him a moment to start singing before the celebration began.' - Volkskrant

P!NK

"From the very first songs of the show, it was clear that Pink is not only a studio wizard but also an outstanding live vocalist. With her powerful, slightly raw vocals, she delivered an impressive set of strong pop/rock tracks, including ‘Trouble’ and ‘God Is a DJ’.' Review by Trouw.

Amy Winehouse

On October 22, 2007, Amy Winehouse (†2011) performed in our hall!

'After two canceled shows in the Netherlands, British soul singer Amy Winehouse was finally back on Dutch soil on Monday. At the Heineken Music Hall in Amsterdam, she delivered a convincing one-hour set. Afterward, the artist had had enough. ‘Now we want to get drunk,’ said the performer of the song Rehab.' — Review, scanned newspaper article Telegraaf

Rihanna

'Rihanna’s concert was completely sold out, resulting in a hall full of teenage girls and the occasional young man. Some parents even came along as chaperones, which proved necessary during the daring show by the Barbadian singer. The younger audience members occasionally had to close their eyes: the young star is fond of revealing outfits and sexy dance moves.' Review, scanned newspaper article METRO

Ferdy Damman wins Zilveren Camera

Our in-house photographer Ferdy Damman won first prize in the Art, Culture, and Entertainment category of the Zilveren Camera. The award-winning photo was taken during a Stray Cats concert at the Heineken Music Hall in Amsterdam.

50 jaar Nederpop Live

'On October 3, a unique concert took place at the Music Hall in Amsterdam: 50 Years of Nederpop Live! Over thirty artists and bands performed, offering a musical overview of the past fifty years of Dutch pop music. Boudewijn de Groot, Spinvis, Junkie XL, Voicst, De Dijk, Jan Akkerman, Bløf, and Krezip were among the distinguished lineup that set the tone for the evening. A recording of this event proved to be musically unparalleled, historically significant, and instantly legendary.' - VPRO

Killers concert canceled last minute due to a terror threat

Adele

Before taking the stage, she was unrecognizable, smoking outside by the entrance. Then, barefoot, she stepped onto the dark stage and delivered an unbelievably amazing concert!

'Gimmick or not, Adele charms the audience with her disarming, straight-from-London remarks, and of course, mainly with her voice. Almost impossible to contain on the CD, the full grandeur of her range is completely unavoidable live. The HMH, not exactly a small venue, feels too small for this British hurricane.' - NU.nl

Krezip farewell concert

On June 27, 2009, the band said farewell at the Heineken Music Hall. In 2019, Krezip returned after a ten-year hiatus, with an interview on De Wereld Draait Door on Tuesday, January 29, and performances at the Ziggo Dome and Pinkpop.

Najib Amhali

Najib Amhali performed nine shows at the Heineken Music Hall in 2009, becoming the first artist to appear so many times in a row on our stage. In his show Best of, he effortlessly switches from a Turkish taxi driver to a Hindustani taxi driver, with appearances by the De Boer brothers, a Chinese man from Krommenie, and a Surinamese national coach. The run began on December 25, 2009, and concluded with the final show on January 5, 2010.

Event setup & breakdown

Ever wondered what goes on in our hall during the setup and breakdown of an event over five days? In 2010, our former colleague Ronald Roes created a timelapse recording of the Black Box.

X-Qlusive D-Block & S-te-Fan

Their own X-Qlusive: for many hardstyle artists, this tops the bucket list of their careers. Why? The DJ plays almost the entire night for a packed Heineken Music Hall, and the audience knows their music inside out. In 2011: D-Block & S-te-Fan!

Katy Perry

The Heineken Music Hall smells like cotton candy! Katy Perry delivered an amazing show in 2011. After an opening salvo with Teenage Dream, Waking Up in Vegas, and Ur So Gay, she performed nearly two(!) hours of hits and more.

Kylie Minogue

Kylie Minogue’s concert was moved from the GelreDome in Arnhem to the Heineken Music Hall in Amsterdam. Although the GelreDome is much larger than HMH, the stage setup remained the same. It was the biggest production ever for HMH, with a stage extending all the way to the back of the hall.

HMH 10 years

In ten years, the Heineken Music Hall has secured its own unique place in the world of pop concerts. It also stands strong as a venue for business events.

Black Box seated make-over

Can you still remember our colorful seats for a seated show? In 2011, we gave the Black Box a minor makeover.

Kinderen Maken Muziek

King Willem-Alexander, Queen Máxima, and their children attended the finale of Kinderen Maken Muziek with 3,000 kids at the Heineken Music Hall. In May 2011, Queen Máxima launched the program Kinderen Maken Muziek, which aims to teach children in the Netherlands to play a musical instrument in a group setting.

Laatste concert Lou Reed

Lou Reed’s (†2013) final concert in the Netherlands took place at the Heineken Music Hall.

"‘Street Hassle’ breaks the spell of the evening. Melodic, exciting, and above all listenable; a small wave of relief runs through the hall as the title track from the 1978 album begins. The pleasing flow continues with the pitch-black ‘Cremation’ (from Magic And Loss, ’92), ‘Think It Over’ (from Growing Up In Public, ’80), and ‘Walk On The Wild Side’ (from the hit album Transformer, ’72), culminating in a grand and compelling ‘Sad Song.’ This is exactly what the audience had hoped for when they bought their tickets for From VU to Lulu.' Review by OOR.nl

Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers

Some concerts are simply ones you wish you’d attended. Tom Petty (†2017) and The Heartbreakers at the HMH was one of them; their first full-scale performance in thirty years to be seen in the Netherlands.

For the song The Waiting, he brought Pearl Jam singer Eddie Vedder (who played the Ziggo Dome the next day) on stage, much to the delight of the audience. Jack White performed at HMH the following day, June 25, 2016, and watched Tom Petty’s show from our loge

Our venue acoustics

For a pop concert, you need a different hall than for a classical music performance. Bart, from Het Klokhuis, visited our venue to see how a hall is designed to make the sound as good as possible during a concert.

Ed Sheeran & Passenger

Ed Sheeran performed to a sold-out HMH on Tuesday, November 20, 2012, with Passenger as his opening act, and together they delivered a stunning show.

Normally, many people aren’t as familiar with the opening act as the main artist, but on Tuesday the 20th, the audience sang along enthusiastically to both Ed Sheeran’s and Passenger’s songs, both of whom are good friends.

Kanye West

'What makes tonight’s show worth it alone is the intensity with which he spits his lyrics. West screams until his voice can’t take it anymore, pouring so much emotion into the final lines of his verses that his voice cuts right through you.' Review by OOR.

We often get requests from artists, but Kanye West set a record. Everything had to be white, walls, furniture, floor, everything. For his dressing room, the local promoter even bought a high-pile white carpet for around €10,000, something you can’t rent anywhere. That evening, he drove straight onto the loading dock in an armored car and went directly on stage. He left in the same car afterward and never saw the dressing room. Luckily, the carpet could be returned.

Last concert Joe Cocker

Joe Cocker’s (†2014) final concert in the Netherlands took place at the Heineken Music Hall.

'The encore closed with Cocker’s still brilliant cover of The Beatles’ ‘With a Little Help From My Friends,’ and, as already suggested, no song could have been more fitting for a show like tonight’s. Joe’s band makes the performance truly worthwhile. Already by the second song—a cover of The Box Tops’ ‘The Letter’—the audience is immersed in instrumental craftsmanship with a saxophone, organ, and guitar solo (in succession!).' — Review by OOR.nl

John Mayer

On October 23 and 24, John Mayer brought his Born and Raised World Tour 2013 to the HMH. He had already played the Ziggo Dome on October 22—where a major artist like him could easily sell out—but he also felt it was essential to perform in the smaller, more intimate HMH. Mission accomplished!

Originally, this tour was meant to promote his fifth studio album Born and Raised in 2012, but Mayer had to cancel the planned tour due to throat problems. That made the 2013 shows even more spectacular!

Stromae

'Stromae enhances strong songs like ‘Ave Cesaria,’ ‘Carmen,’ ‘Formidable,’ and ‘Papaoutai’ with impressive visual effects, making them hit the audience even harder and gradually creating a euphoric atmosphere in the hall. This slender young man from Brussels is an artist who maintains excellent control throughout his show—from his facial expressions and movements to his voice. He proves it during the finale, an a cappella version of ‘Moules Frites.’ He can really sing, and very well at that.' — Review by OOR.nl

Farewell concert The Scene with Thé Lau

At the Heineken Music Hall, Thé Lau (†2015) performed his farewell show with his band The Scene. The singer, who suffered from an incurable form of throat cancer, delivered a rock performance like an emotional rollercoaster with numerous guest musicians. In the end, he and his band gave one final show at TivoliVredenburg, but for the king, the singer was happy to make an exception.

Sky City Festival

On August 2, the Sky City Festival took place in Arenapark, next to the Heineken Music Hall. Inside HMH, there was also a stage. The festival catered to fans of top DJs and electronic (live) acts, with a nod to pop music. Avicii, Afrojack, and Knife Party were among the very first names on the lineup.

Iconic headphones on the facade

Heineken Music Hall gets the iconic headphones on its facade, in collaboration with SMS Audio.

Freek Vonk

Freek Vonk performed for the first time in 2014 with three shows at the then Heineken Music Hall. What started as a few shows has grown into a milestone of over 100 performances by 2026.

Concert Die Antwoord

'Tonight, NS is running a modified schedule due to ‘harsh winter weather,’ but the atmosphere in the HMH is just as intense. Heavy beats underscore the profound message ‘fok de systeem,’ sending the hall full of devoted fans into a frenzy. During the second song, Ninja jumps into the crowd and performs his signature dance with obscene hip movements. It must be said, the HMH goes wild and that’s impressive with such a large audience.'  Review by Kindamuzik

Kensington

'Without a doubt, ‘Let Go’ is the highlight. Late in the set, the audience climbs onto shoulders, sings along, dances wildly, and is completely captivated by Kensington. Eloi silences the hall with a Hozier cover of ‘Take Me To Church,’ while stadium anthems ‘Streets’ and ‘War’ have the crowd belting out every word again. The songs hit at a relentless pace.' Review by NPO 3FM

De Jeugd Van Tegenwoordig 10 years

De Jeugd van Tegenwoordig celebrated their ten-year anniversary with their biggest shows on home turf so far: twice in a sold-out Heineken Music Hall. And at a birthday party this big, you treat your audience—which is exactly what happens at X: Celebration of a Super Decade, an entertaining show where both the crowd and the artists steal the spotlight.

During the encore (Gekke Boys and De Formule), it becomes clear just how huge De Jeugd van Tegenwoordig is. The songs are so powerful and popular that no effort is needed to get everyone singing and jumping along in the Heineken Music Hall.

Opening Restaurant First

In 2015, Heineken Music Hall expanded with Restaurant First and the Legends Lounge. During Mika’s concert, guests could visit our restaurant for the first time to enjoy a delicious three-course menu featuring familiar flavors with a modern twist. At Restaurant First, quality and hospitality—just as you’d expect from HMH  and our partner Vineyard—go hand in hand. We cook with sustainable ingredients and ensure you can get to the hall in time for the concert.

The Legends Lounge is an atmospheric lounge located on the second floor of the Foyer. This beautiful space allows guests to enjoy a pre-concert dinner, hosts hospitality packages, and can also be reserved for small private groups.

Spaces within HMH are regularly repurposed. Before the restaurant opened, this area served as a smoking room, and prior to that, it was Planet Internet, where visitors could access free high-speed internet on 24 fixed computers. Back in 2001, our audience didn’t yet have mobile phones with 5G internet.

5 shows during ADE

In October 2015, for the first time in 20 years, no alarms went off at our venue. For five days, we were open for ADE shows featuring none other than Hardwell presents Revealed, Martin Garrix, Axwell ^ Ingrosso, I Am Hardstyle, and We Are The Future.

Typhoon

'The Lobi Da Basi tour concludes with two shows at the HMH—his biggest club shows ever, undoubtedly attracting many ‘people who don’t usually like hip-hop but agree with Typhoon.’ Yet he makes no concessions, intending the show to be about more than just Lobi Da Basi, encompassing everything he has done. His latest album—a richly arranged pop record—may go beyond hip-hop, but these HMH shows are undeniably a victory for Nederhop.' Review by 3VOOR12

Iggy Pop and Josh Homme

'Twenty years ago, anyone who said that of the trio Lou Reed, David Bowie, and Iggy Pop, the latter would last the longest would probably have been laughed at. But seeing and hearing him on stage at 69, it’s clear he’s in top form. The scream in ‘China Girl,’ or the crowing in ‘Break Into Your Heart’—it seems effortless. The highlight is undoubtedly the bombastic ‘Paraguay’ from the latest album, where Pop preaches, Homme drives the tempo on bass, Fertita shows he’s a top guitarist, and Matt Helders seems ready to smash through his drum kit like a beast. These are the moments that stick with you. Apparently, this remarkable but highly successful collaboration between the four musicians is a one-time-only event.' Review by LFLMagazine

Heineken Music Hall becomes AFAS Live!

After nearly 16 years of sporting three stars and the Heineken Music Hall name on the facade, it was time to pass the baton. Since 2017, AFAS Software has been our naming partner, and we have been called 'AFAS Live'.

X-Qlusive Ran-D

Their own X-Qlusive: for many hardstyle artists, this tops the bucket list of their careers. Why? The DJ plays almost the entire night for a packed AFAS Live (formerly Heineken Music Hall), and the audience knows their music inside out. In 2017: Ran-D!

De Staat

De Staat celebrated their 10-year anniversary at AFAS Live!

'De Staat plays powerfully—and, as always, hard-hitting—and finally the audience starts to let loose. The three latest studio albums, O, I_CON, and Machinery, make up most of the set. The audience is left with only one question: how will Torre handle it this time? Witch Doctor in a packed AFAS Live—simple, from a small circular stage in the center of the hall. The frontman leads his audience to another impressive climax.' Review by OOR.nl

Sting

'Right from the start of Sting’s concert in the recently renamed HMH, the 65-year-old rockstar shows that he has just as much energy as when he performed with The Police exactly forty years ago at Paradiso. A performance that, Sting says, is still vivid in his memory.' Review NPO Radio 2

Concert DI-RECT

On Friday, November 3, 2017, DI-RECT performed their own show at AFAS Live for the first time in 18 years.

New facade

Since the name changed from Heineken Music Hall to AFAS Live, a new name has also appeared on the building. The aluminum facade now features the name in blue—but it wasn’t easy: the original design wasn’t clearly visible, so 70,000 blue caps had to be screwed into the facade by hand. Three people and a cherry picker spent almost three months on the task, and as you can see in the timelapse, the weather wasn’t great!

Have you ever noticed that when you stand closer, you can see 400 music genres on the facade?

Last concert Charles Aznavour

Fans of Charles Aznavour (†2018) had one last chance to see the legendary French singer live in the Netherlands. The 91-year-old had already performed a farewell concert at the then HMH in 2016, but on March 3, 2018, Charles Aznavour returned for one final performance.

Liam Gallagher

In 2018, Liam Gallagher delivered an incredible show on our stage. 2,473 fans in the audience had traveled directly from the UK to see this performance!

'It’s one of no less than nine Oasis songs Gallagher brought tonight. Immediately after the massive-sounding ‘Rock ‘n’ Roll Star,’ comes the equally loudly sung ‘Morning Glory.’ Remarkably, the singing isn’t just from Britpop veterans but mostly from young fans likely seeing Gallagher for the first time. That youthful enthusiasm makes everything that follows feel like a football match, with Gallagher’s name chanted during every pause as if he’s the star player of the local team.' Review by OOR.nl

Forward Thinking Leadership with Obama

In September 2018, President Barack Obama joined top international speakers in the Netherlands for the Forward Thinking Leadership seminar.

First show without coins

In October 2018, AFAS Live switched to a cashless payment system. That way, you’ll never lose coins in the mosh pit or during the polonaise. For most people, it took some getting used to, and it was a disappointment for all collectors!

Concert Bizzey

Bizzey’s biggest Dutch show at AFAS Live, 'What Would Jesus Do?', was a success. You can watch the spectacular performance, featuring guest artists Frenna, Chivv, Mula B, Boef, Josylvio, Poke, Yung Felix, Jonna Fraser, and Jayh, here.

First show isla Talent Stage

Besides the Black Box, AFAS Live also has a smaller venue on the first floor: the isla Talent Stage. In collaboration with isla Pastilles, we aim to give emerging Dutch talent a stage here after almost every regular concert. On March 14, 2019, The Maureens were the first aftershow band on the isla Talent Stage following The Hollies’ concert. Fun fact: this room has had four different names over the years—from Postbank Lounge to Rabobank Zaal, and from Beat Box to isla Talent Stage.

K-Pop sensation Monsta X at AFAS Live with the 'We Are Here World Tour'

On July 3, 2019, Monsta X turned AFAS Live upside down with hits like DRAMARAMA and 'Shoot Out'

The Dirty Daddies & De Koorbazen

After their 2018 show, The Dirty Daddies returned to AFAS Live in 2019. The Brothers In Arms performance took place on Friday, October 11, featuring a surprise set by De Koorbazen. The concert celebrated The Dirty Daddies’ 7-year anniversary, with the men’s choir from Zwolle joining in on three songs!

Edivisie finals AFAS Live

PEC Zwolle crowned themselves Dutch champions of FIFA20 by defeating AFC Ajax in the final!

C2C: Country to Country Festival

The last full-capacity event at AFAS Live before the COVID-19 measures.

C2C: Country to Country, Europe’s largest country festival, returned to AFAS Live in Amsterdam on Saturday, March 7, and Sunday, March 8, 2020. After a very successful first edition in 2019 with 3,500 visitors, the festival expanded to a two-day setup in 2020. Luke Combs headlined on Saturday, March 7, and Darius Rucker was the main act on Sunday, March 8.

Vaccination center at AFAS Live

On Monday, May 10, GGD Amsterdam opened its fourth vaccination site at AFAS Live in Zuidoost. Where normally 6,000 people would be dancing to their favorite band or artist, this time AFAS Live welcomed visitors for a COVID-19 vaccination. Our big goal? Getting live events back as quickly as possible and AFAS Live is happy to contribute.

First Shows with COVID-19 Measures

Slowly, the doors can open again. In addition to small living-room concerts and interactive online events, the Black Box is back for shows by K3, Floor Jansen, Daniel Sloss, DJ MAG Top100 Awards, A State Of Trance, Claptone The Masquerade, Paul Kalkbrenner, Typhoon, and the FunX Awards.

Stromae at AFAS Live: a futuristic spectacle

After a seven-year hiatus, we welcomed Stromae back to AFAS Live with a special show following the lifting of most COVID-19 measures. The avant-premiere offered a preview of both his upcoming album 'Multitude' and the world tour that accompanies it.

At the end of the show, during David, she walks through the hall in a glowing jacket to a stage next to the sound and light boards, then launches into fan favorite Ribs, sending the entire AFAS Live—even the balconies—into euphoric jumping. Mission accomplished.' Oor.nl
