Cypress Hill
Three decades ago, B-Real, Sen Dog, and DJ Muggs set off on a musical journey that left popular culture stunned, amazed, and eager for more. Cypress Hill, named after a street in Los Angeles, broke through in 1991 with the release of their self-titled debut album. The singles “How I Could Just Kill a Man” and “The Phuncky Feel One” became underground hits, and the group’s outspoken support of cannabis earned them a strong following within the alternative rock scene. On Wednesday, June 17, the group returns to the Netherlands for a show at AFAS Live.
Following their debut, Cypress Hill released Black Sunday in the summer of 1993. The album entered the Billboard Top 200 at number one, earned three GRAMMY® Award nominations, and went triple platinum in the United States. This made Cypress Hill the first rap group to have two albums simultaneously in the top 10 of the Billboard 200, as well as the first Latin American hip-hop group to achieve platinum and multi-platinum success. Since Black Sunday, Cypress Hill has released seven more albums, including the critically acclaimed Elephants on Acid (2018).
In 2019, Cypress Hill made history once again by receiving their own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In 2021, the group released “Champion Sound,” produced by Black Milk. The track appears on the soundtrack of R.B.I. Baseball 21 and also serves as the centerpiece of the band’s collaboration with Montejo Cerveza. That same year, Cypress Hill celebrated the 30th anniversary of their self-titled debut album with a vinyl reissue by SONY, a 7-inch box set, a digital re-release featuring eight previously unreleased tracks, a graphic novel, and their own STANCE socks.
The group remained busier than ever in 2022. On March 18, 2022, Cypress Hill released Back In Black, which received widespread critical acclaim. In its review, Kerrang! stated that the album “confirms their status as a collective that continues to build on its legacy.” On April 20, 2022, Cypress Hill released their documentary Insane in the Brain, part of Mass Appeal’s Hip Hop 50 series in collaboration with Showtime. Upon release, The New York Times called the documentary “an often compelling chronicle of the group,” while Variety noted that it “puts Cypress Hill’s sweeping influence and groundbreaking, Latin-infused hip-hop—blended with powerful metal rock—into perspective.”
On July 10, 2024, Cypress Hill once again made pop culture history with a landmark performance alongside the London Symphony Orchestra at the Royal Albert Hall. The collaboration—famously predicted 28 years earlier in an episode of The Simpsons—became reality during a sold-out, one-night-only event that fused their acclaimed album Black Sunday with an unforgettable classical crossover. Multiple publications hailed the performance as a piece of “hip-hop history,” with Louder Sound noting that the group “sets an entirely new standard for crossover.”
