Hightlights of the week 19

8 May 2026

Last week, AFAS Live once again hosted some incredible shows. We enjoyed two nights with Japanese singer-songwriter Mitski, who effortlessly captivated her loyal fanbase with songs like My Love Mine All Mine and I Bet on Losing Dogs. Van Dik Hout also turned AFAS Live into one big celebration with hits like Op De Golven Dansen Wij and Alleen Maar Jou, alongside special guests including Cesar Zuiderwijk and Zoë Livay.

Mitski - 6 & 7 mei

“Where’s my phone?!” Mitski tears the place apart, frantically running around. She checks beneath the armchair. Inside the writing desk drawer. In the opened globe bar used to hide liquor. She throws her hands against her head. The image she rather theatrically wants to create at AFAS Live is that of an old-fashioned living room in which she suffers a nervous breakdown. The band swells, growing more and more tense. “Where’s my phone?!” -2 voor 12

Mitski Miyawaki has barely been on stage for a minute when a fan shouts “I love you!” straight through the fragile opening song, In A Lake. For a brief moment, she seems to grimace, but not long after, Mitski lets the audience know that the feeling is mutual. She will continue to emphasize this throughout the performance, although the sparse moments of audience interaction sometimes come across as rehearsed and performatively enthusiastic.

A guaranteed spontaneous moment arrives in the form of an acoustic rendition of I Don’t Smoke, a Mitski classic that is absent from this tour’s setlist but gets played after a fan request. Whether the fresh reluctance with which she begins the song is genuine or part of the act hardly matters — it results in a wonderfully intimate moment regardless. -OOR
